Mike Pelfrey to undergo Tommy John surgery….Darn

MIke Pelfrey is gone for about 12 months as it was announced today that he will undergo Tommy John surgery. To his defense, Pelfrey was pitching so well this season as he had great velocity and movement on his sinker. However, this could end up as a good thing. Chris Schwinden is up to replace Pelfrey in the rotation and he is not the best of pitchers. This could open up a door for Matt Harvey in the big leagues as soon as he is ready. Also, Pelf needed a new start, and this could get him that on a different team. He never seemed to thrive in the big city. I think he could be a great fit for a team like the A’s or Padres.

2012 Potential Pitching Rotation

The Mets pitching rotation for this year has been pieced together with veterans. Some of them were signed to one year contracts like Chris Young, and Chris Capuano. So I was thinking, what would the rotation look like next year.

  1. Johan Santana
  2. R.A. Dickey
  3. Jon Niese
  4. Dillon Gee
  5. Matt Harvey

For Johan, he is an ace and will still be our ace next year no matter what he does. His experience and knowledge of how to get hitters out will keep him a quality pitcher. His personality will help him get hitters out in my opinion. Besides it’s not like he is 40.

For R.A. I Believe he is still a good knuckleball pitcher and he can give us innings. I am in no way expecting the 2.8 ERA he got us last year, but I do expect him to be a quality starter for us.

Jon Niese has the potential to be the best lefty in the game. He has a great curveball that he can control, a cutter  to get into righties and get them out, a Fastball that can get upto 95, and a change. He can be a great pitcher.

Dillon Gee is a 4 pitch guy who can control all of them. 4 quality pitches, a fastball, curve, change, and slider. His change is great, and can get lefties out. I love this guy, he can get through innings and doesn’t walk many. He can be like a Carl Pavano, maybe better.

Now Matt Harvey, he is young, but I think he will be in that rotation. He is currently having a ridiculous season in Single A. He is 4-1 with a 1.10 ERA. His most recent start he went 6 1/3 innings let up 1 hits, and 9 strikeouts. Are you kidding? That is rediculous. I love Matt Harvey and maybe this is me wanting to see him in 2012 not just thinking he will be there in 2012. He is also the power pitcher the Mets need.

Now, if you notice, one guy missing from this equation is Mike Pelfrey. I honestly think that Pelf is not in the 2012 plans and will be traded. I really don’t think he is all that good, even though he does have his moment. I think he is wearing another uniform next year and this team is better without him.

What do you guys think?
