Finally! NO-HAN! Johan Santana throws the first no-hitter in Mets history.

Each and every game in Mets history had one thing in common. Whether it was to lead off the game, the 5th inning, or with 2 outs in the 9th, the opposing team always found a way to muster up a base hit off Mets pitching. 8019 games later, that is no longer true. Johan Santana has thrown the first no-hitter in Mets history.

All through spring training, and up to today experts have been saying, “He’s washed up” “He’s not healthy” “He isn’t the same pitcher he used to be” We shouldn’t be hearing those voices anymore. This man is a bulldog topping a career high with 130 and I think he would have killed Terry Collins if he had tried to take him out of the game. One thing people aren’t talking about is that this is his second consecutive shutout. Simply dominant.

Johan could not do this alone, however, he had help from his bats and Mike Baxter. Johan usually gets no run support and tonight he got 8 runs, that made it easier on him, and on Terry Collins. Second, Mike Baxter sacrificed himself, his shoulder, and potentially his season to make the catch for Johan and that is absolutely incredible.

Every Mets fan felt the same way that I did, we all thought this wouldn’t happen. But it did and I could not be more excited. This must be what it feels like to watch them win a world championship. Unbelievable. Congrats Johan! Lets go Mets!

Mets Post Game: Mets 6, Cardinals 6 F/10

Box Score

3 Standout Performances:

  1. Ike Davis went 2 for 3 with a walk and a 3 run homer to the opposite field.
  2. Lucas Duda had 2 hits including a long homer about 3/4 of the way off the batters eye in center field.
  3. Mike Pelfrey went 6 innings, let up 8 hits, 5 runs (4 earned), 0 walks and 2 strikeouts.

Pelfrey was using some weird new delivery today. It wasn’t a complete change, he was just putting his hands over his head in the windup. If it works, I don’t care, but he needs to figure himself out. Pelfrey only threw his sinker today, thats it. It had some good velocity, but he threw maybe 10 breaking pitches all game. I understand he needs to get a feel for his pitches, but not to that extent.

I was about to start a post on why Ike hadn’t homered yet this spring…oh well.

Lucas Duda has amazing power to all fields. The one he hit today was at least 430 ft.

Den Dekker has looked great defensively in center field. He is so comfortable out there.

MNN’s World Series Prediction

Well, I did well through the Division series picking 3 of 4 teams, but, the CS did not go as well as both teams I picked did not make it through. This toughens things, the Cardinals or the Rangers. Let’s do comparisons first…

Bullpen:

Advantage Rangers. First of all, the Caridnals’ closer Motte, can not yet be trusted in big situations while Neftali can. Also, I would rather Adams, Uehara, and Ogando in the late innings over Dotel, Salas, and Rzepczenski(???).

Leadoff Men: Furcal vs. Kinsler.

Kinsler. Easy. The man is a beast.

Middle of the Lineup:

This one has to go to the Birds. I feel that Hamilton will struggle and the combined power of Pujols, Berkman, and Holliday is a scary post season tandem.

Overall Offense:

Texas. They are too deep for the Cards. Outside of Pujols, Berkman, Holliday, and Freese..the Cards have nothing on Texas.

Starting Pitching:

This one is tough. I almost want to call a draw, but I cant. Carpenter is better than Wilson, so that goes to the birds there. However the rest is Holland, Lewis, and Harrison Vs. Garcia, Jackson, and Lohse. To me, since I think pitchers will excel in this series, I have to give the advantage to the Rangers because of A, the lineup they have to pitch through and B, they have power arms. It is really a toss up though.

WORLD SERIES PREDICTION.

The Fall Classic will be 7 games long.

There will be a parade for Nolan Ryan through Texas.

Rangers in 7…write it down.

Mets Post Game: Cardinals 6, Mets 5

Box Score

3 Standout Performances:

  1. Chris Schwinden went 6 innings let up 6 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts.
  2. Willie Harris went 3 for 4 with his 2nd home run of the season.
  3. Josh Satin got his first career RBIs with a 2 run double.

Chris Schwinden got into bad luck tonight. He deserved his first career win with his outing today but, I guess the stars were just not alligned for him tonight. Don’t worry however, he did get his first career hit.

Congrats to Josh Satin on his first career RBIs. Hopefully he can form to become a quality run producer.

Although he was tagged with the loss tonight, I still love Daniel Herrera but I don’t know why.

Mets Post Game: Cardinals 6, Mets 2

Box Score

3 Standout Performances:

  1. In possibly his last home game as a Met, Carlos Beltran went 0 for 3 with a strikeout.
  2. Lucas Duda had 2 hits and a run scored.
  3. Niese went 6 innings, let up 5 hits, 5 runs (3 earned), 1 walk, and 7 strikeouts.

Niese pitched so much better than his line showed. He let up 3 runs in the 5th inning due to stupid-minded defensive plays and errors. He has matured so much on the mound this year.

Jose Reyes tried to ignite this Mets offense by hitting a lead off triple and scored to put the Mets on the board. However, as soon as he scored, the offense just slowed back down.

Jake Westbrook had the Mets pounding the ball into the ground all day long. He was very economical with his pitches tonight.

Mets Post Game: Mets 6, Cardinals 5

Box Score

3 Standout Performances:

  1. Angel Pagan hit his first career walk off homer in the 10th to win the game for the Mets.
  2. Josh Thole had 2 hits including 2 RBIs.
  3. Carlos Beltran hit a game tying 2 run homer for the Mets.

What a good game for Angel tonight. He had been in a little bit of a cold streak up until now and hitting that home run could really get him going on a hot streak.

The Mets truely fought for this game. Down 4-0 early and 5-4 late they really stepped up and came back to win this game.

Beltran is really heating up going into the trade deadline. Hopefully the Mets will get at least one great prospect for him.

Dickey pitched well tonight giving up 4 runs in 6 1/3 innings of work. Although his true bright spot was his 2 for 2 with an RBI at the plate.

Grade for the Game: B+

Mets Post Game: Mets 4, Cardinals 0

The Numbers:

  1. R.A. Dickey was great today going 8 1/3 shutout innings allowing 4 hits, 0 runs, 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts.
  2. Ike Davis had 1 hit tonight which was a 3-run home run to center field.
  3. Carlos Beltran hit an RBI single to score Angel Pagan and give the Mets a 4-0 lead.
  4. Angel Pagan went 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored and a triple.
  5. K-Rod nailed down the save to get the win.

R.A. Dickey is the definition of a godsend for the Mets.

Beltran came through with an RBI single and seems to be getting it back.

Why do Ike’s balls always seem to travel farther?

Grade for the Game: A

Mets Post Game: Cardinals 8, Mets 7 F/13

The Numbers:

  1. Mike Hessman went 1-for-5 in his first start this year, coming mere feet from a grand slam in the first inning.
  2. Angel Pagan hit a huge 2-run homer in the 8th inning.
  3. Ike Davis hit a pinch hit 2-run single to tie the game for the Mets.
  4. Beltran hit his first homer of the year to get the Mets closer.
  5. Every starter got a hit besides Francoeur and Blanco.
  6. Santana was not Santana tonight going 5 2/3 of 13-hit, 7-run ball, walking 1 and striking out 2.
  7. Acosta, Takahashi, Dessens, K-Rod, Parnell, and Valdes all pitched scoreless innings.
  8. Feliciano gave up an RBI hit to Pujols in the 13th to lose the game.

The Mets came back from a 6-0 hole to tie the game.

Feliciano has not been Feliciano this year.

Although he’ll probably take some crap for in it from the NY media, I would have done exactly what Jerry did and pitched to Pujols instead of the red-hot Holliday.

The Mets need to start winning extra inning games. They are a league-worst 10-21 in 1-run games.

Grade for the Game: B

Mets Post Game: Mets 8, Cardinals 2

The Numbers:

  1. Jose Reyes went 1-for-5 with a 2-run home run.
  2. Jeff Francoeur went 1-for-4 with a 3-run home run.
  3. Every Met starter had a hit besides David Wright and Josh Thole. Yes, I am including Jon Niese in this stat.
  4. Beltran had a breakout game going 2 for 3 with an RBI.
  5. Ike Davis also had an RBI.
  6. Jon Niese pitched 6+ great innings giving up 7 hits and 1 run.
  7. Manny Acosta gave up a run, but Valdes and K-Rod pitched scoreless innings.

Finally some offense…

Niese was great tonight, out-dueling Adam Wainwright.

Beltran looked like Beltran tonight, 1 of his hits included a double.

I have one thing to say: Home Sweet Home
